M STREET — A Georgetown University student was observed this past weekend asking a homeless man if he accepted Venmo.

The student, Jeffrey Melvin (COL ’18), was near the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and M Street at approximately 4 PM this past Saturday when a homeless man asked him for change.

“I didn’t have any cash,” said Melvin, “but I’m very much into social justice so I asked if I could Venmo him. I mean everyone I know has Venmo.”

According to witnesses on the street, Melvin seemed shocked that the man did not have Venmo.

“He just kept telling the homeless guy that Venmo was the most practical way to transfer money and was wondering how the man splits the check whenever he’s at Los Cuates or Mai Thai” said Stephanie Pitcock, a Georgetown area woman who witnessed the interaction.

“I mean I don’t even use cash anymore,” said Melvin. “I thought the homeless man would prefer Venmo; it’s just so much easier.”

“Some people are just late to technology, I guess. I’m sure he’ll get it soon though.”
