Public Safety Alert Merchant Ship Sinking in VCW

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

Please be advised that on Monday, November 10, 2014, at approximately 6:00 p.m., a student reported to the Georgetown University Police Department (GUPD) and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) that between Sunday November 9, 2014 at 11:00 p.m  and Monday, November 10, 2014 5:00 p.m. an unidentified U-Boat sank an unattended Allied merchant ship in a residence hall room in Village C West and destroyed several thousand tons of war material.  There were no signs of forced entry.

The Department of Public Safety is requesting that anyone who has information regarding this or any other incident(s), or who noticed any U-Boats before or after the incident, to contact The Metropolitan Police Department Second Depth Charge Station at 703-841-8888, or the Sonar Office at (202) 686-0901, or the High Seas Command Information Center at (202) 332-0010 immediately. They may also contact DPS at (202) 965-2371.

Witness description of suspect(s):  Dark gray, 67.1 meters in length, able to displace 760-800 tons of water, armed with 14 torpedoes and a crew of 44.

Safety Reminder

The Department of Public Safety would like to remind all students to practice the following security measures:

1. On campus students should call DPS at (703) 841-9337 regarding any threats to commercial shipping by U-Boats.

2. Off campus students with immediate safety concerns/radar detection of U-Boats should call MPD at 911 and DPS at 687.HELP.

3. Practice security at home by always traveling in armed convoy with at least two destroyer escorts, not straying from air cover, and maintaining a “zig-zag” pattern in open water.

4. Students noticing suspicious activities or U-Boats loitering around entrances to residence halls, ports of call, or commercial waterways should immediately notify DPS at (202) 758-3637.

5. Students may utilize the services of THE SHUTTLE or DPS SAFERIDES escorts as a means of providing safe passage for war materials to Allied nations. Call 784.RIDE for DPS SAFERIDES escorts.

6. Always remember to maintain an adequate number of lifeboats on deck.

Georgetown University’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) notifies the campus community when U-Boat attacks are reported to DPS or the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) which the University believes represent a threat to its the war effort, in a manner consistent with the Campus Nautical Security Act. The University uses its best efforts to provide information that is both accurate and helpful, but community members should recognize that the University is able to relay sonar information only as it is reported to DPS and/or MPD.
