On Election Night, Student with Misplaced Priorities Runs to Congress

By

A thrilled Jeremy Michelson (SFS ’15) is reportedly the only student to have run to Congress following the successful re-election of Tennessee Fifth District Congressman Jim Cooper.

“WE DID IT! COOPER IS COMING BACK!” Michelson screamed as he ran all the way to the Capitol Dome, joining a crowd of zero as he cheered the incumbent and prominent blue-dog on to his sixth consecutive term.

Citing Cooper’s smooth victory over longshot Brad Staats as reason for celebration, 19-year-old Michelson broke from a larger crowd of students running to the White House and veered instead to the home of the U.S. legislative body.

Michelson, who, like Rep. Cooper, is from Nashville, saw today’s election as real historical progress.

“Starting next term, we blue-dogs will yet again have a real representative in Congress. WOOOOOOOO!!!!”

Michelson caused some confusion, forcing befuddled Congressional security guards to greet the Georgetown student, not having expected any celebrators.

“We really weren’t expecting anybody, certainly for a House race and definitely not for such a low-key seat,” Guster Sorola, the first security guard on the scene, said. “Which is why we were suspicious — we assumed that he was super high. But he turned out to just be really enthusiastic about local politics.”

Most witnesses remain confused about Michelson’s actions, so The Heckler asked a Congressional expert, historian Jonathan Downy, about the Fifth District race.

“It was one of the least competitive in the country,” Downy said, stroking his beard. “Why anybody would run confuses me.”

“JIM COOOOOOOOOPER YEAH!!!” Michelson said in response.
