Super Clever Costume Has To Be Explained

By

GEORGETOWN – In an attempt to cement their position as Georgetown’s cool couple, Marina De Souza (NHS ‘21) and Kelvin Strenski (COL ‘21) hit the party scene dressed as a moth and a lamp. “It just seemed so fun and original” De Souza said, “and I also had this super cute moth costume just lying around, so I thought I’d try to get some use out of it.” Strenski donned a lampshade from his neighbor’s house, which turned out to be a very popular item among the party people. Every person wanted a chance to put on the party accessory and pretend that they thought of a costume as fun and original as a lamp. “The lampshade was an unfortunate casualty of the evening,” Strenski reported. “Not quite sure what I’m going to tell my neighbors. I don’t really know them that well.”

The two were disappointed to find that not all of the partygoers immediately recognized their costumes. It became especially difficult when the two became separated and the lampshade wandered off on the head of an anonymous partyperson. “They kept asking me if I was a butterfly. I was in gray. Butterflies aren’t gray, moths are gray. It was such idiotry,” explains a disgruntled De Souza. “I ended up dressed as a guy with a light bulb drawn on my chest. Some people asked if I was an idea, and I actually thought that was a better costume than the lamp so I was okay with that,” Strenski said. He later walked back these statements after a pointed glare from De Souza.

At many junctures in the evening, the two posed for pictures. One Ellis Lloyd (COL ‘22) acted as the couple’s photographer for one of these pictures. “All I did was ask what they were,” he said. “I might as well have hurled a decorated gourd in their vicinity because oh boy were they upset.” He reports that Strenski said something to the effect of “Come on man. We’re a moth and a lamp. Moths like lamps. It’s cute.” and De Souza said something to the ring of “You sound so dumb.” The two declined to comment on these statements, but both maintain that the concept of their costumes really wasn’t all that hard to understand and that people can be really stupid sometimes.
