I, Heckler staff writer Horace Harmon Lurton III, took a stab at comedy performance this past semester when I tried out to be a troupe member of the Georgetown Improv Association. At the audition, I found myself surrounded on all sides by tall lanky white boys. I asked the head of improv, “Why all the 6ft plus Irish Catholics?” to which she responded, “We have no idea what’s up this year, usually there are wayyy more girls and short people auditioning.” As I swatted through spaghetti arms and St. Ignatius sweatshirts, I encountered a freshman whom I questioned about this phenomenon:
Me: Who’s your comedy inspiration?
Sean Kelly (Col ‘25): John Mulaney.
Me: And why is that?
Kelly: He’s just so wry and clever, I think his jokes are
Me: Are you sure it’s not because he impregnated Olivia Munn?
Kelly: What? No of course not, it’s his old timey sensibilities and
Me: Are you suure it’s not because he impregnated Olivia Munn?
Kelly: No! It’s his self-deprecating dry wit combined with
Me: Are you suuure it’s not because he impregnated Olivia Munn?
Kelly: Argh! It’s his rejection of hypermasculinity and
Me: Are you suuuure it’s not because he impregnated Olivia Munn?
Kelly: Ok fine. Want some coke?
