MCCARTHY HALL – Sophomore Ellen Koffman (SFS ’17) announced this week that she has never been more thankful for Martin Luther King Jr.’s contributions to the advancement of long weekends.
In a statement released last Thursday, Koffman stated, “Recent current events have really made me realize how important King’s work toward promoting our basic human right to get this Monday off of school really was.”
Koffman told the Heckler that she spent Martin Luther King, Jr. day reflecting on how lucky she was to have been able to go out the night before.
“If it hadn’t been for him, I never would have been able to go to Crew Formal on Sunday night. In fact, I have even decided to forgive him for the hangover I had all of Monday.”
Koffman’s classmates shared her sentiments about the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. “What MLK did for us is truly amazing,” said Rachael Bowers (COL ’17). “He stood up every day, giving speeches and risking his life just so that students like us could sleep in on his birthday.”
When asked about King’s efforts in the fight for racial equality, Koffman said that she thinks the Civil Rights Movement was one of the most successful movements in the last 100 years.
“I mean, it worked, didn’t it? Everyone gets an extra day off of class, regardless of race. If that’s not equality, then I don’t know what is.”
At press time, Koffman was misquoting the “I Have a Dream” speech.
