GEORGETOWN – The Georgetown Hoyas football team gathered in silence on Sunday. The reason? The college football playoff selection show. For some teams this occasion would be a cause for applause, but in this small room in the Thompson Athletic Center, you could hear a pin drop. However, sadness did not account for the silence in the room, although the selection committee scorned the Hoyas for the fourth year in a row, no – this was a scared silence.
When it came to reading off the names, the first was no surprise: Alabama. Now the tension in the room really began to heighten. Georgetown understood that if the committee were to grant them the four seed, it would mean a meeting with Alabama. The Hoyas, given their 5-6 record, knew they were a long shot, but even the slightest possibility of meeting ‘Bama on the gridiron was enough to send the whole room into a frenzy of frightened footballers. Some players wept silently. Others Prayed. One Alec Ogeltree (COL ‘20) vomited thrice. About it he remarked, “What can I say? Those guys are big and scary.”
Seeds two and three were named. Georgetown managed to avoid both, but they were by no means out of the woods. At this point, hushed nervous chatter started. The Center, Blake Doughty (MSB ‘19) said, “I hear that if you look directly in Nick Saban’s eyes, you will never be able to see another face. Only Saban’s superimposed on different bodies.” Jax Gaynor, (COL ‘21) added, “I hear you can’t run around their defensive line because you are pulled into their gravitational field.”
Finally, the analyst read the four seed: Oklahoma, with a 12-1 record in the Big 12. Georgetown was saved. An elated defensive lineman yelled, “No postseason for us baby!” Everyone rejoiced. The quarterback, Axl Griffin (COL ‘19) sat down with the Heckler to give us some of his thoughts after the fact. He said, “Yeah I’m just glad we don’t have to play them. I don’t even know if we’d win. Next year though, we’re shaping up pretty well.” So next year, Alabama, come and play Georgetown! We’re ready and rarin’ to go. As long as we play as well as we did against Holy Cross, a 32-31 loss, we should be A-okay.
