Rivalry Win: Georgetown Hoops Receives NIT Invite, Villanova Fails to Secure Bid

By

GEORGETOWN- What a beautiful time to be Hoya! This past Sunday, it was revealed that the Georgetown Men’s Basketball Team would continue to play into the postseason, receiving an invitation to play in the NIT as a #3 seed. Making the reveal even sweeter was that Georgetown’s bitter Big East rival, Villanova, failed to qualify for the NIT for the fifteenth consecutive year. The Hoyas sported a pretty 19-13 record (9-9 Big East) in 2018-2019, while the Wildcats’ 25-9 mark (13-5 Big East) wasn’t quite enough to get them into the NIT.

“It really is gratifying to know that while we’re going to be facing off at home against Harvard this Wednesday, ‘Nova will have to watch the game on the TVs in their hotel in Connecticut,” said sophomore Mark Herring (COL ‘21), referring to the site at which Villanova will face St. Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament. “The fact that we made the NIT and they didn’t really shows that our programs are trending in opposite directions.”

“I think the prevailing notion in years past has been that Villanova has been getting the better of us in this rivalry,” said Big East Freshman of the Year James Akinjo (Basketball ‘22). “Hopefully with us playing in the NIT and them not making it, people will start to realize that we’re not to be taken lightly.”

The Heckler sends its best wishes to the Hoyas in its matchup against Harvard and beyond, and hopefully we can add an NIT Champions banner to our historic program. Our only hope is that our hated rivals over at Villanova weep tears of sorrow at not even getting the chance to bring home an NIT title. Maybe next year, Wildcats.
