OP-ED: Why I’m Running From GUSA Senate

By

The changing of the leaves marks that special time of year: when disappointed Capitol Hill hopefuls look to get the next best thing by running for GUSA Senate. Yet, while many students are eager to compare candidates’ platforms, the rhetoric of campus politics can take a toll. I’m taking every measure possible to avoid the GUSA Senate and I am encouraging my fellow Hoyas to do the same.

I must confess that this initially started as a joke. A week ago I was walking through Red Square when out of nowhere I heard a whisper in my ear: “could your Georgetown experience be improved?” Startled, I bolted off into the ICC, only to be followed by this first-year in a sport coat waving his flyer behind me.

Yet, the lengths I’ve had to take to avoid candidates have only grown. Most recently, I had to replace the lock on my dorm room after a break-in by one particularly ambitious SFS 25er. When I asked this candidate what she was doing in my dorm room at 2:00 AM on a Tuesday, she acted as if nothing was abnormal: “I was just trying to leave an infographic under your pillow. Every vote counts and it is your civic duty to make your voice heard at the ballot box!”

Nevertheless, I don’t plan to stop running from GUSA until this election cycle ends. Longer term, I am hoping the passing of a restructuring bill will serve to check prospective candidates’ egos. If a student is craving the title of “Senator” so badly, just run for the actual Senate. Ossoff did it, how hard can it be?
