Georgetown Reconciliation Fund Only Slightly Less Timely Than Safety Warnings

By

Only 3 years after saying they were creating a Fund (2019), 6 Years after students highlighted and protested Georgetown’s appallingly racist history (2016), and 184 years after brutally enslaving and selling human beings to fund a floundering university (1838), the Georgetown Administration has sent an emailing pledging to begin “a new stage in [their] work to understand and respond to [the] University’s historical role in the enslavement of people of African descent.”

The email pledged an annual contribution of $400,000 to descendant communities. President John DeGoia explained, “While this seems like a great deal of money, it is less than half of my annual salary and will be covered by the tuition of just four students per year!”

Upon receiving the email, many students realized why the university calls campus safety warnings that come a full day after incidents are referred to as “timely” by the university.

Several students shared their opinions with The Heckler:

“When you include the context of their glacially slow response to horrific crimes against humanity, a day late for campus safety concerns actually seems like they care a lot!” —Katy Murberry, SFS ‘25

“After receiving this email for like the third time, I’ve come to appreciate GUPD sending me emails only a day after something they’ll never do anything about.” —Tony Iris, NHS ‘23

“Sorry I don’t check my email; please get this notecard with a tape recorder drawn on it out of my face.” —Brian Scobb, MSB ‘24
